Joined in 2006As the parent of a beautiful bi-racial girl and avid world traveler, I am proud to support diversity, equity, and inclusion at CenterCal and be a part of building a society where everyone feels included, safe, respected, and accepted. Magic happens when we come together, celebrate each other’s uniquenesses, actively listen, give grace, and collaborate.
Vice President, Human Resources
Joined in 2008I choose to serve on the diversity, equity, and inclusion council because while we were all created equal, we are not all treated or viewed equally or fairly; nor are all opportunities afforded to everyone. As a female minority, I have encountered and/or witnessed racism, ostracism, economic and socioeconomic divide, cultural, religious, and physical discrimination…the list goes on. My hope and prayer are that everyone would truly embrace and accept ALL our differences to make the world and work environment a better place for generations to come.

I joined CenterCal DEI initiative because it’s critical I am involved in a movement that constantly creates awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion for all. I am a huge advocate of embracing culture, celebrating uniqueness, and spreading love within my organization as well as my community.
Being a black woman raising a beautiful black child, I am committed to teaching my daughter that she can do and be anything in life without being limited, judged or overlooked due to the color of her skin. It’s imperative that I go forward and do my part in ensuring that all unnecessary roadblocks are removed from her path to success and anyone else’s who is considered different in this society.

DEI is important to me because I believe EVERYONE should feel seen and feel like they have a place. I want to create a world where my daughter and our community feel included and equal. I want her to have a world where all the unique qualities about her are celebrated and accepted. I want her to be proud of the woman she is and never have to feel like she must fit into someone’s box to be loved.
To live in a world where each of us are seen and heard is the greatest gift we can give and in turn receive. I believe it is important for us to understand that DEI is much more than those we personally identify with, but that it is also those we don’t understand. It’s mental health. It’s our gifts and abilities. DEI is about our veterans and leaders, our elders and our children. It’s about getting the more sturdy and hefty chair to support someone’s back. DEI is about embracing different bodies and races. It’s about representation and seeing someone like you in marketing ads or in movies. It’s about staying curious and evolving. Being open to learn and have tough and courageous conversations. DEI is about extending grace when someone may not agree with you and being open to talk about it. That is what DEI means to me.

Joined in 2018When I joined this industry in 1995 I worked for a small RE REIT in Detroit, MI where 3 of 5 leasing VPs were women (unheard of at the time); and out of 20 leasing agents, 4 were black (or 20% of the team). This was progressive! Research shows that diversity and inclusion foster measurable improvements to engagement, creativity, and profitability. I am deeply grateful DEI aligns with CenterCal’s core values, and we have created a space by virtue of this committee (and beyond) to explore ways to educate and implement. To effect change that empowers everyone to show up as their authentic selves without having to “conform” to archaic standards that so often left many with the best and brightest ideas without a voice.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity—where everyone finds beauty, a place, and a sense of belonging. Joining this group was driven by my eagerness to deepen my understanding of DEI, aiming to offer stronger support to my team. Together, we guide and uplift one another through life's various currents. True success lies in empowering others to thrive, fostering a community where everyone's achievements contribute to our collective fulfillment.
On a personal note, my son, Zach, recently married a classmate from WSU, Amanda, whose family immigrated from Guatemala. They are a beautiful couple.

I choose to be an active participant in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives because I believe in the fundamental importance of fostering an environment where every individual, regardless of their background, identity, or orientation, feels valued, respected, and included.
As a gay, non-binary individual, my personal journey has illuminated the significance of creating spaces that celebrate the richness of diversity. I advocate for the LGBTQ community and all marginalized communities because I understand the unique challenges they face, having navigated them myself. My experiences have fueled a deep commitment to breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities to thrive.
In the spirit of DEI, I am dedicated to amplifying voices that often go unheard and championing inclusivity in every aspect of life. I firmly believe that a diverse and inclusive community not only benefits individuals but also enriches the collective experience, fostering creativity, innovation, and a deeper understanding of one another.
By actively participating in DEI efforts, I aim to contribute to the creation of a world where acceptance, respect, and equity are the cornerstones of every interaction. Through open dialogue, education, and advocacy, I strive to make a meaningful impact in dismantling systemic biases and fostering a society where every person, regardless of their identity, can live authentically and flourish.

Joined in 2020DEI to me means keeping an open mind, giving grace, and accepting others for their unique selves and points of view. I have a passion for people and wanting to know more about them and what makes them unique. In my community and at CenterCal, I support an environment where we are encouraged to be our unique selves and offer our unique perspectives. By doing so, it creates a more collaborative, creative environment where people feel valued and encouraged to succeed.
